• Ron O'Neal was born to Ernest and Eunice O'Neal, on September 1, 1937 in Utica, New York. His father Ernest was a former jazz musician who worked in a factory. Ron was a classically trained stage actor with a strong presence who started appearing on screen from around 1970. He played Joe Peralez in the 1971 film, The Organization, starring Sidney Poitier. The following year he had the title role as Priest in the Gordon Parks, Jr. directed, Sig Shore produced film, Super Fly The film became a surprise success and there was talk of an oscar nomination. The following year he directed the sequel, Super Fly T. N. T. which had O'Neal, Sig Shore and Alex Haley credited as writers. Even though the first Super Fly had brought him recognition, bad press had a lasting negative impact on his career..
  
  He appeared in film and television until the early 2000s. During that period he had leading roles as Paulo in The Master Gunfighter, and as Otis in The Hitter. He also had recurring roles as H. H. in Bring 'Em Back Alive and as Lt. Isadore Smalls in The Equalizer, the latter which starred Edward Woodward. His last film role appears to be as Frank Harris in the 2002 film On the Edge which starred Fred Williamson.
  
  He died of pancreatic cancer in Los Angeles, California on January 14, 2004 at age 66.
